Course Description
Evaluation and Treatment patient with Parkinson's diseases (PD) is a great challenge to
today's health care professional. Although most patients survive and recover to some
degree, many survivors are left with significant physiological deficits that produce long-
term need for assistance from caregivers and from society. This MODULE 1 of 2 module
courses will provide a comprehensive overview on recent advances in the management of
individuals PD. Both MODULE 1 and MODULE 2 of this course will review and discuss
recent advances related to management of individuals who have PD and will analyze the
implications of current advances of management of these individuals in physical and
occupational therapy. The concepts and principles of this basic to intermediate-level course
will enhance the clinician's knowledge base and hands-on skill through
lecture, small group discussion, case studies, and video presentations. Instruction will
focus on review and analysis of relevant topics including pathophysiologies, secondary
complications, signs and symptoms and management of patients with PD. Diagnostic tests,
sensory-motor deficits, medical management and rehabilitation with different interventions,
and evidence-based information on rehabilitation will also be addressed. The discussion of
the current literature will be focused on assisting the participants expand their skills in
diagnosis and intervention strategies. This course is designed for participants with a basic
to intermediate level of experience.
Contact Hours
Upon completion of this MODULE 1, participants will be given a certificate of attendance
for 6.0 continuing education hours, approved by North Carolina Physical Therapy
Association. (approved provider of Continuing Competence Activities through the North
Carolina Physical Therapy Association; provider #19-1215-041). In recognition of this
program and an approved provider of AOTA (Provider # 5184), 0.6 AOTA CEUs will be
awarded to all OT, OTA participants from all states and 6.0 continuing competence hours
have been awarded to all PT and PTA participants.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of MODULE 1 of this course, participants should be able to:
* Describe at least 5 symptoms from patients with PD and relate them to the abnormal
neurophysiology.
* Identify and describe at least 3 examination procedures used to evaluate patients with
PD in order to establish a diagnosis, prognosis and plan of care.
* Compare and contrast the concepts and principles of different treatment models and
their application in the management of patient with PD.
* Identify and describe at least 4 different treatment techniques to reduce rigidity of
patients with PD
* Demonstrate at least 4 treatment techniques to improve balance in patients with PD
* Examine the scientific basis of current investigations of exercise for individuals with PD.

2:00 hours: Management of Rigidity, Exercise Training for Functional Activities, Strategies of
Interventions for Postural Corrections, Balance Training, Research Update.
